Overview

ORAU is seeking qualified candidates on behalf of a partner organization for an Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer role. The selected candidate will be employed by ORAU’s partner and will perform work onsite at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), specifically within the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC).

The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking an experienced Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to support design and system engineering efforts for advanced microreactor technologies.
INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE‑NE), providing the research, development, and demonstration capabilities needed to accelerate nuclear innovation from concept to deployment. MFC collaborates closely with the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) to bring next‑generation microreactors to INL for testing and demonstration.

The I&C Engineer will apply deep technical expertise to design, develop, install, and maintain the instrumentation and control systems that monitor and operate engineering systems in nuclear facility environments. This includes applying engineering principles and advanced data analytics to ensure systems perform safely, reliably, efficiently, and predictably.

Responsibilities

• Define system requirements and develop design concepts through direct customer engagement to fully understand functional and design objectives.
• Produce engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and implementation documentation based on customer inputs.
• Perform and/or oversee technical calculations and evaluations to verify that design requirements are fully met and properly documented.
• Support design implementation, including procurement of materials/equipment/services, review and approval of work packages, and oversight of construction activities.
• Participate in and present design reviews to validate design integrity and completeness.
• Develop and execute qualification and startup testing procedures for assigned systems and projects.
• Maintain system readiness throughout the equipment lifecycle, applying appropriate maintenance strategies and modifications as needed.
• Ensure the accuracy and adequacy of System Configuration information by verifying alignment between design requirements, physical configuration, and documentation.

Required Skills
• Demonstrated ability to design, analyze, and evaluate engineering systems
• Strong communication skills—capable of working effectively with operations, engineering, nuclear safety, maintenance, and program personnel
• Ability to identify, plan, and execute engineering tasks such as design work, maintenance activities, and operating procedure development
• Strong organizational and leadership abilities to guide engineering tasks to completion

Preferred Skills
• Experience in the design and installation of nuclear reactor instrumentation and control systems
• Experience with configuration management of engineering drawings and technical documentation
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities with high attention to detail

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in I&C Engineering or related engineering discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or
• Master of Science in I&C Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
• Degree must be from an ABET‑accredited program
• U.S. citizenship is required
